Making Fastmail the default mail app in iOS

If you have an Apple device on iOS 14 or higher, you can change the default mail app to the Fastmail mobile app. When you tap on an email address link in another app that supports mailto links, you'll be taken directly to the Fastmail mobile app.

Change your default mail app

  1. Open Settings in your device.
  2. Tap Fastmail.
  3. Tap Default Mail App, then Fastmail. You should see a checkmark next to the Fastmail app once you've made the change.
  4. Tap Fastmail at the top-left of the screen to save your changes.

Troubleshooting

Below are current known issues when updating the default mail app:

  • If you are a multi-account user, tapping a mailto: link will take you to the last Fastmail account you had open on the app. You won't be prompted for the account you wish to use.

  • If you have previously set up the Apple Mail app with a Fastmail profile, then tapping mailto: links in Safari will still open with Apple Mail rather than the Fastmail app.

  • There's a known issue where the default mail app reverts back to Apple Mail when you reboot your device in iOS 14. This issue can occur with any mail clients, and not just the Fastmail mobile app. Apple fixed this in iOS 14.0.1.

  • There's a known issue with having multiple addresses in the default mail app on iOS 14. If you choose an address while sending an email in the app, a different address from the account may be used to send it.
