Set up eM Client

The instructions and screenshots in this setup guide are for the latest version of eM Client, which you can download for free for Windows.

eM Client needs its own app password to access your information for versions 9 and below. If you use your normal password or your Fastmail two step verification password on an external account, syncing to an external service won't work and you will see a password error.

Set up mail (version 10)

  1. Open eM Client. If you have not set up an account in eM client yet, the New Account window should appear with the Automatic Setup section open. If you have already set up an account, select eM Client from the menu bar and click Add Account.
  2. A New Account window will open. In the Automatic Setup section, fill in your email address and click Start.

  3. Click Continue. eM Client will find the server settings.
  4. Fill in Your name. This is the name people will see on the email you send. Click Next.
  5. Select your choice for the Set up encryption/Share public key step. Click Next, then click Finish.
  6. You will be prompted to enter your Fastmail login credentials. Here, you'll need to enter your Fastmail username and your account's master password (not an app password), then click Log in.

  7. If you have two-step verification enabled for your account, you'll be prompted to authenticate using your 2FA method. On the following screen, you'll be asked if you want to grant eM Client permission to access your Fastmail account. Click Allow.

eM Client will now fetch your folders and synchronize your mail.

Set up mail (version 9 and earlier)

In the Password section, enter your app password:
    • Email address: Your full Fastmail username, including the domain.
    • Password: Your eM Client app password. (What is an app password?)

  3. Click Continue. eM Client will find the server settings.
  4. Fill in Your name. This is the name people will see on the email you send. Click Next.
  5. Select your choice for the Set up encryption/Share public key step. Click Next, then click Finish.

Set up calendar

  1. Open eM Client. If you have not set up an account in eM client yet, the New Account window should appear with the Automatic Setup section open. If you have already set up an account, select eM Client from the menu bar and click Add Account.
  2. Select the Calendar section, then select CalDAV.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Fill in the server address, your username and app password:
    • Account address URL: https://caldav.fastmail.com/dav/calendars/user/<username@domain.tld>/ (replace <username@domain.tld> with your full Fastmail username, including the domain).
      • Example: If your email address is kittens@example.com the account address is https://caldav.fastmail.com/dav/calendars/user/kittens@example.com/
    • User name: Your full Fastmail username, including the domain.
    • Password: Your eM Client app password. (What is an app password?)

    • Click Next.

  5. Give the account a name if you want. This is only used for display purposes within eM Client. If you're using contacts you will want to use a different name to the contact account: 'Fastmail Calendar' for instance. Click Next. Click Finish.

Your calendars should now sync with eM Client.

Set up contacts

To access a business/family account shared contact list, repeat the steps above and enter the following settings:

  • Account Address URL: Enter carddav.fastmail.com/dav/addressbooks/user/<username@domain.tld>/<masteruser@domain.tld>.Shared.
    • While the url references the master user (because that's who the contact list belongs to), still use your email address in the username.
  • User name: <username+shared@domain.tld>.
  • Password: Your eM Client app password. (What is an app password?)
