How to set up your BlackBerry

The instructions and screenshots in this setup guide are for BlackBerry 10 OS. Previous versions of BlackBerry OS are very similar, although the screenshots may not match exactly what you see on your device.

Blackberry apps need their own app password to access your information. If you use your normal password or your Fastmail two-step verification password on an external account, syncing to an external service won't work and you will see a password error.

Set up your email

  1. Open the System Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts.

  3. Tap Add Account, then Email, Calendar and Contacts

  4. Fill in your email address. This is your full Fastmail username, including the domain.

  5. Tap Next then enter your app password. (What is an app password?)

  6. Once it has finished verifying your account information, you can then enter a Description for your account and you're done.

Your Fastmail account is now ready to use; open the Mail app to read your email. To sync your calendar with your device, see the instructions further down the page.

I want to sync all/only some of my mail folders

You can configure BlackBerry to either sync all, or only a select few of your mail folders to your device.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Email, Calendars and Contacts.
  3. Tap your Fastmail account in the list at the top. It will be labeled with whatever you typed in for the Description field when you set it up.
  4. Scroll down to Edit Folder settings.

  5. Select which folders you want to sync, or use the option at the top to select all.

  6. Tap to go back to your Account, then tap Done.

Set up your calendar

  1. Open the System Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts, then Add Account
  3. Tap Advanced in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Select CalDAV

  5. Enter the details for this calendar account:

    • Description: A name for your calendar information
    • Username: Your Fastmail email address, including the domain
    • EmailAddress: Your Fastmail email address, including the domain
    • Password: Your app password. (What is an app password?)
    • Server Address: Enter caldav.fastmail.com/dav/principals/user/<username@domain.tld>, but replace <username@domain.tld> with your own Fastmail email address.
      • Example: If your email address is kittens@example.com the server address is caldav.fastmail.com/dav/principals/user/kittens@example.com

  6. Once it has finished verifying your account information, you're done.

Your Fastmail calendars will now sync with your phone and are ready to use; open the Calendar app to view and edit your calendar.

Set up your contacts

  1. Open the System Settings.
  2. Tap Accounts, then Add Account
  3. Tap Advanced in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Select CardDAV

  5. Enter the details for this contacts account:

    • Description: A name for your contacts information
    • Username: Your Fastmail email address, including the domain
    • EmailAddress: Your Fastmail email address, including the domain
    • Password: Your app password. (What's an app password?)
    • Server Address: Enter carddav.fastmail.com/dav/addressbooks/user/<username@domain.tld>, but replace <username@domain.tld> with your own Fastmail email address.
      • Example: If your email address is kittens@example.com the server address is carddav.fastmail.com/dav/addressbooks/user/kittens@example.com

  6. Once it has finished verifying your account information, you're done.

Your Fastmail contacts will now sync with your phone and are ready to use; open the Contacts app to view and edit your contacts.

To access a business/family account shared contact list, repeat the operation above, with the following settings:

  • Description: A name for your shared contacts information
  • Username: Your Fastmail email address, including the domain
  • EmailAddress: Your Fastmail email address, including the domain
  • Password: Your app password. (What's an app password?)
  • Server Address: Enter carddav.fastmail.com/dav/addressbooks/user/<username@domain.tld>/<masteruser@domain.tld>.Shared.
    • While the url references the master user (because that's who the contact list belongs to), still use your email address in the username.

Updating your password

If you revoke the app password for your Blackberry, you will need to generate a new one and update your Blackberry if you wish to restore access.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Email, Calendars and Contacts.
  3. Tap your Fastmail account in the list at the top. It will be labeled with whatever you typed in for the Description field when you set it up.
  4. Scroll down and tap on the Update Password field. Then type in your new password.
  5. Now scroll down to the "SMTP Mail Server" section and tap the Update SMTP Password field. Then type in your new app password.
  6. Tap Done, then go back to Account then tap Done again.

You should be able to both send and receive mail again with your Fastmail account. If you can do one, but not the other, try following the steps again carefully: your password may have been updated correctly for incoming mail, but not for outgoing mail, or vice versa.

If you have your calendar set up on your device, you will need to update the password there as well:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Email, Calendars and Contacts
  3. Tap your Fastmail calendar account in the list at the top. It will be labeled with whatever you typed in for the Description field when you set it up.
  4. Scroll down to the Update Password field and type in your new app password.
  5. Tap Done.

If you have your contacts set up on your device, you will need to update the password there as well:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Email, Calendars and Contacts
  3. Tap your Fastmail contacts account in the list at the top. It will be labeled with whatever you typed in for the Description field when you set it up.
  4. Scroll down to the Update Password field and type in your new app password.
  5. Tap Done.
