Custom swipes allow you to quickly take actions on emails in your message list while you're on your mobile device (as well as some devices with touch screens, such as a Microsoft Surface). You can choose actions for up to four different custom swipes, so you can get through your messages according to your own personal preferences and workflow.
Custom swipes are set per user, so your swipe preferences will stay consistent regardless of what device you're using to access your account.
By default, swipes are set to Archive (right swipe) and Delete (left swipe).
How to set custom swipes
You can set custom swipes by going to Settings → Swipe options in the mobile app or web interface.
Four custom swipe options can be set, based on the direction and length of the swipe:
- Right swipe short
- Right swipe long
- Left swipe short
- Left swipe long
Select a swipe option to set up actions and colors.
Swipe actions in Folders mode
If your account is set to Folders mode, the following actions can be set for each swipe option:
- Archive: Mark the message read and move it to the Archive folder.
- Delete: Move the message to your Trash folder. If the message is already in the Trash folder, this will instead Undelete the message.
- Mark read/unread: Toggle the message as read or unread.
- Snooze: Snooze the message so it returns to your Inbox later. You can set the swipe to always snooze the message until a certain date and time, or select Ask me every time to choose a snooze time upon swiping. (Note: Snooze is not an available swipe option for customers on a Basic plan.)
- Move to: Move the message to a different folder. You can set the swipe to always move the message to a certain folder, or select Ask me every time to choose a folder upon swiping.
- Report spam: Move the message to your Spam folder, and train your spam filter to recognize it as spam.
- Not set: No action is set. The message cannot be swiped in this direction and length.
Swipe actions in Labels mode
If your account is set to Labels mode, the following actions can be set for each swipe option:
- Archive: Remove the currently active label.
- Delete: Move the message to your Trash folder. If the message is already in the Trash folder, this will instead Undelete the message.
- Mark read/unread: Toggle the message as read or unread.
- Snooze: Snooze the message so it returns to your Inbox later. You can set the swipe to always snooze the message until a certain date and time, or select Ask me every time to choose a snooze time upon swiping. (Note: Snooze is not an available swipe option for customers on a Basic plan.)
- Move to: Move the message to a different label. You can set the swipe to always move the message to a certain label, or select Ask me every time to choose a label upon swiping.
- Edit labels: Add or remove labels to the message.
- Report spam: Move the message to your Spam folder, and train your spam filter to recognize it as spam.
- Remove from Inbox: Remove the message from the Inbox.
- Not set: No action is set. The message cannot be swiped in this direction and length.
Swipe colors
Choose different colors for each swipe option to easily see what action is being taken when swiping.
To choose a color, go to Settings → Swipe options. Select a swipe option, then click the dropdown menu labeled Color.
Select None to return to Fastmail's default color for that action.
Select Custom to set your own color. Click the square to choose a color, or enter a hex code, and click Save.
How to disable swipes
If you prefer not to have swipe actions enabled, they can be turned off by going to Settings → Swipe options and selecting Not set for each swipe option.
