Using Bitwarden with Fastmail

If you have a Bitwarden account, you can create Masked Email addresses quickly and easily through Bitwarden's Generator.

Note: Connecting your Fastmail account to Bitwarden requires the use of API tokens. API tokens are not available to users on Basic subscription plans.

For more details about using Masked Email with Bitwarden, see Bitwarden's help page here.

Connecting your Fastmail account to Bitwarden

First, find Fastmail in the Bitwarden Generator by following these steps:

  1. Open Bitwarden and go to View, then select Generator.
  2. In the What would you like to generate? section, select Username.
  3. Click Options
  4. In the Username Type section, select Forwarded Email Alias.
  5. In the Service section, select Fastmail. (Keep this window open.)

Next, you will need to generate an API token in your Fastmail account to use with Bitwarden.

Note: An API token grants access to your account's information. Treat this API token like a password, and do not give an API token to any person or service you do not trust.

Generate the API token by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the Fastmail web interface and go to the Settings → Privacy & Security screen.
  2. Find the Connected apps & API tokens section. Click Manage API tokens.
  3. Click New API token.
    • A Verify it's you box may appear. Enter your password and click Continue. (For more information, see our Password-protected actions help page.)
  4. Enter a name to identify this API token. (Make sure it's something you will be able to read and understand in the future, such as "Bitwarden Masked Email," in case you need to review or revoke access.)
  5. Select the Masked Email checkbox.
  6. Click Generate API token. (Do not click Done just yet.)

The next page will display your API token, which looks like a long string of numbers and letters. Next, you will add this API token to Bitwarden:

  1. In Fastmail, click the API token to copy it to your clipboard.
  2. Return to the Bitwarden Generator and paste the API token into the field labeled API Access Token.

Once these steps are complete, you can test the connection by generating your first Masked Email address through Bitwarden.
