Migrate to Fastmail from Skiff

Fastmail is a secure, privacy-first email service that has been around since 1999. If you're looking to migrate from Skiff, you can try us free for 30 days.

You can bring your email, calendars, and contacts with you. If you own a custom domain, you can set it up in Fastmail and continue using all of your existing email addresses at the domain.

Set up your email address and/or domain

The first step is to sign up with the email address you want to use with Fastmail.

If you don't have your own domain, you'll need to select an email address using one of Fastmail's domains.

If you have your own domain, you can follow the steps in our Migrating business email to Fastmail help page to transfer your domain, mail accounts, and addresses to Fastmail.

Transfer your mail

You can move all of your existing mail from Skiff to Fastmail.

First, you will need to export your mail from Skiff. You can export your mail as an MBOX file by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Skiff account.
  2. Go to Settings → Export.
  3. Under Emails, click Export.

Once your emails have been downloaded, you can import them into Fastmail using our MBOX import tool:

  1. Log in to the Fastmail web interface and go to Settings → Migration → Import.
  2. Click Proton and Hey, MBOX files.
  3. Click Upload files and select the MBOX files you wish to import, then click Open.
  4. You'll see the names and sizes of the MBOX files that will be imported. On the right side, there is a drop down menu titled Destination where you can select a destination folder for the emails to be imported into. (The destination is set to the Inbox by default.)
  5. Click Start import.

You will need to keep the browser tab open while the import is in progress. If you have to stop the import, you can resume it at a later time by reimporting the same MBOX file. Messages that have already been successfully imported will not be imported again, so you do not have to worry about duplicates.

Please note that the MBOX file will not retain folder structure or labels from Skiff.

You can also download individual messages from Skiff as EML files. This can be done by opening the message in Skiff, clicking the three dots next to the reply button, and selecting Download EML. You can import EML files into Fastmail by dragging and dropping them into your message list.

Transfer your contacts

You can move all of your contacts from Skiff to Fastmail.

First, you will need to export your contacts from Skiff. You can export your contacts as a VCF file by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Skiff account.
  2. Go to Settings → Export.
  3. Under Contacts, click Export.

Once you've exported your contacts, they can then be imported to Fastmail:

  1. Open the Settings → Migration → Import screen.
  2. Click Upload contacts and calendars.
  3. In the Contacts section, you can either drag and drop the VCF file, or click Select file and upload the file from there.

You can continue to use your account as normal while the migration is running.

In most cases, we're not able to tell if a contact has been duplicated. We create a new entry for each imported contact to ensure that none of your data is lost.

Transfer your calendars

You can move all of your calendar events from Skiff to Fastmail.

First, you will need to export your events from Skiff. You can export your events as an ICS file by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Skiff account and open Calendar.
  2. Go to Settings → Export.
  3. Under Calendar, click Export.

Once you've exported your calendar events, they can then be imported to Fastmail:

  1. Open the Settings → Migration → Import screen.
  2. Click Upload contacts and calendars.
  3. In the Calendars section, you can either drag and drop the ICS file, or click Select file and upload the file from there.

If your Fastmail calendar already contains one of the events you are uploading, the details in the event will be replaced by those in the uploaded file.

Transfer your files and pages

You can download files from your Skiff Drive and upload them into Fastmail's file storage.

First, you will need to download your files from Skiff by following these steps:

  1. Log in to your Skiff account and open Drive.
  2. Go to Settings → Export.
  3. Under Pages & files, click Export.

Your files will be downloaded in ZIP format, which you can then extract using the program of your choice.

Once you've exported your files, they can then be imported to Fastmail:

  1. Log in to the Fastmail web interface and go to Files.
  2. Click Upload.
  3. Select Upload files or Upload folder.
  4. Select the files and click Open.

For more information on Files, please see our About Fastmail file storage help page.

I used Send Later and Undo Send in Skiff. Does Fastmail offer these features?

Yes! Our Scheduled Send feature allows you to choose a date and time for your emails to be sent, and our Undo Send feature gives you 15 seconds to recall a message after sending.

We also offer many other features designed to help you stay organized and keep control of your inbox, such as Snooze and Mail rules.
